Dr. Mohammad Khalifa stares dismally at the desk where his elbows press the hard surface. Holding his face with both hands, he makes a vain attempt to smile. The hero – and they are in short supply these days – is wearing a look of defiance, but his words betray this. ‘We asked for help, for weapons, for money, but we were let down.’ He remains resigned even though the indignation in his voice speaks of abhorrence.
