As every schoolchild knows, it all began with an apple.
That is how good and evil came into the world. It arrived in the garden of Eden, when the first woman reached out her hand to the apple tree, plucked that first apple and took the first bite.
Except it didn’t happen like that at all.
Let’s leave aside for the moment the question of whether there was an Eden, or an Eve, or a snake. Let’s allow the story to stand on its own terms – but let’s look more closely at it. Let’s concentrate instead on the apple.
For there was no apple in Eden – or at least not in the original Hebrew text.
