If I were in the position to devise the curriculum for students of a gymnasium, I would take care not to include any ‘useful’ subjects, but only ‘useless’ ones such as Greek, Latin, pure (not applied!) mathematics, theoretical biochemistry, philosophy, art history, world literature, theatre. But since I need to answer another question here – which work of art would I suggest for young people to read, see and listen to – I have to start again.
