Anton Zijderveld studied theology and sociology. After teaching at various universities abroad, he became Professor of Sociology in Tilburg and Rotterdam. Among his publications in cultural sociology are Staccatocultuur, flexibele maatschappij en verzorgende staat (1991), Populisme als politiek drijfzand (2009) and Waarom wij lachen: over de grap, de spot en de oorsprong van humor (2011). He was also a prominent member and party ideologue of Christian democrats CDA. However, he cancelled his membership in 2009 in protest against the party’s course.
