Barber van de Pol

The Netherlands, 1944

Barber van de Pol is a translator and a writer of columns, essays and novels. She studied Spanish in Amsterdam and became a book reviewer for NRC Handelsblad and De Groene Amsterdammer. She also taught translation classes at the University of Groningen. Van de Pol became known through her translations of Jorge Luis Borges, Cervantes and Julio Cortázar, and won the Martinus Nijhoff translators’ prize in 1975. Among her own works are De engste stad (1988), Leonards lijstjes (2007) and the translation novella Mobydickiana (2009). In 2013, she published Zingen is geluk, a collection of essays.
