Carlos Franz is a writer of novels such as Where Paradise Once Was (1994), La muralla enterrada (2001) and The Absent Sea (2005). Franz studied law and sociology in Chile. Besides novels, he publishes short stories and essays, and regularly contributes to Latin American and Spanish newspapers and journals, such as El País, Letras libres and La Nación. Between 2006 and 2010, he was a cultural attaché at the Chilean embassy in Madrid. He recently published Almuerzo de vampiros (2007).
