Harry van Bommel has been an MP for the Socialist Party for more than fifteen years. In the Chamber, he is spokesman for European and Foreign Affairs. Van Bommel is strongly opposed to the radical neoliberal globalization and questions the democratic nature and effectiveness of the current EU. In 2005, he was one of the leaders in the referendum campaign against the European Constitution. In the current campaign, he has now spoken out against the association agreement with Ukraine, which he considers to be harmful for all parties involved. Before his political career, Van Bommel was member of the council of the City of Amsterdam, policy advisor for the Socialist Party and secondary school teacher.
