Jan Brokken is a novelist and a writer of non-fiction. He studied journalism in Utrecht and at the Institut d’études politiques of the university of Bordeaux, and worked as a journalist with prominent Dutch newspapers Trouw and Haagse Post. In 1984, Brokken’s debut novel De provincie appeared. He went on to write over thirty books, among which the bestseller De vergelding, on a dark page in the history of Dutch village Rhoon, stands out. Earlier, he published De zee van vroeger (1986), Voel maar (2001), the autobiography Mijn kleine waanzin (2004) and Baltische zielen (2010). Many of his books have been translated or made into a film.
