Jan van der Dussen studied philosophy and history in Leiden and received a PhD in 1980 for his thesis on R.G. Collingwood’s philosophy of history. Between 1988 and 2005, he was Professor of Philosophy and Cultural History at the Open University. Among his published works are History as Science. The Philosophy of R.G. Collingwood (1981), Filosofie van de geschiedenis. Een inleiding (1986) and The History of the Idea of Europe (1995).
