Laila Lalami is a writer. She studied linguistics in Morocco, the UK and the United States, and earned a PhD at the University of California. Lalami was the first Moroccan writer to have her work published by a large American publisher. Her debut Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits (2005) has been translated into six languages. 2009 saw the appearance of the novel Secret Son. Lalami also writes for The Los Angeles Times, The Nation, The New York Times and The Washington Post. She teaches creative writing at the University of California. In 2014, she was awarded the American Book Award for The Moor’s Account.
