Nicola Chiaromonte

Italy, 1905 - 1972

Nicola Chiaromonte was an activist politician and intellectual. An opponent of Mussolini, he fled Italy and fought against Franco during the Spanish Civil War. During his stay in New York, he wrote for journals such as The Nation, The New Republic and the Partisan Review. In 1956, he was co-founder of cultural journal Tempo Presente. Chiaromonte called the twentieth century ‘an age of bad faith’.
