Patrick J. Deneen is Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame. He has published in democratic theory and practice, American political thought, political theology, religion and American liberalism, and literature and politics. Deneen is author of several books, including Why Liberalism Failed (2018), which has been translated into fifteen languages. The book has been widely discussed and continues to have a major impact on the public debate about the meaning of liberalism. It earned a recommendation by former President Barack Obama, who wrote that ‘the book offers cogent insights into the loss of meaning and community that many in the West feel, issues that liberal democracies ignore at their own peril’.
