Paul Gilroy

Paul Gilroy is a sociologist. He studied cultural studies and specializes in Afro-American culture. Before he became Professor of Social Theory at the London School of Economics, he spent a number of years teaching at Yale University. His theories on race, discrimination and culture have been of great influence to the cultural and political awareness of Britain’s black population. He wrote works such as Ain’t No Black in the Union Jack (1987) and After Empire (2004), and co-authored The Empire Strikes Back: Race and Racism in 1970s Britain (1982). More recently, he published Darker Than Blue: On The Moral Economies of Black Atlantic Culture (2012). He has been Professor of American and English Literature at King’s College in London from 2012.
