Rodaan Al Galidi is a writer and a poet. The self-declared ‘Asylum Seeker Laureate of the Netherlands’, Al Galidi fled Iraq to escape the Hussein regime and spent more than nine years in an asylum seekers’ centre in the Netherlands. In 2011, Al Galidi was awarded the European Union Prize for Literature. Shortly afterwards, he failed his citizenship’s exam. He wrote novels and collections of poetry, including De autist en de duif (2008), Bloesemtocht(2014) and Koelkastlicht(2016). Describing the kafkaesque situation he experienced in the Dutch asylum seekers’ system, he wrote the touching yet humorous novel Hoe ik talent voor het leven kreeg, which was published in early 2016.
