Sándor Márai

Sándor Márai was a writer and journalist. Between 1923 and 1929, he worked as Paris correspondent for the Frankfurter Zeitung. Afterwards, he moved to Italy and the United States. He wrote a large number of novels, short stories, essays and plays in Hungarian, but only found a small audience, since his works were forbidden in communist Hungary. His main work, A gyerták csonkig égnek (1942, English translation Embers, 2000) was republished posthumously in 1990 and led to a rediscovery and new appreciation of his work.
