The modern European societies can be called post-secular. Religion no longer determines the structure of society, but the religious communities within modern nations constantly claim prominence, as the issues surrounding Islam in the liberal democracy demonstrate. Jürgen Habermas stresses the importance of a dialogue between the religious and the secular within a nation.
