Arthur Mitzman studied music and history, and obtained a PhD in history at Brandeis University. Between 1971 and his retirement in 1996, he was Professor of Modern History at the University of Amsterdam. He published works such as The Iron Cage. An Historical Interpretation of Max Weber (1970), Sociology and Estrangement. Three Sociologists Of Imperial Germany (1973) and Prometheus Revisited. The Quest for Global Justice in the Twenty-First Century (2003).
