Isaiah Berlin

Isaiah Berlin was a prominent political philosopher. He studied at Oxford, the university where he was made professor in 1957 and where he would remain all his life, with the exception of the period between 1940 and 1946, when he was employed with the British Diplomatic Service. He became known for the essay Two Concepts of Liberty (1958), which he delivered as his inaugural lecture and in which he distinguishes positive from negative freedom – a distinction which has had a great impact on thinking on freedom and equality.
