Peter Mayer

Peter Mayer was born in London and grew up in New York, where he studied English literature at Columbia University. After studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics in Oxford, he turned to literature once more and began working as an editor with Avon Press in New York, but not before having served in the US Merchant Marine and studying in Berlin. Mayer eventually became Editor-in-Chief and Publisher at Avon Books and switched in 1978 to Penguin, where he received death threats after deciding to publish Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses. Mayer also ran the Overlook Press, the publishing company he founded with his father in 1971.
