Alain Badiou
Alain Badiou is at present the most important French philosopher. He was educated at the École normale supérieure in Paris, where he was a student of structuralist marxist Louis Althusser. Badiou was actively involved with French socialist party PSU, and through his numerous political essays and philosophical pieces became a well-known critic of postmodern, capitalist society. As a Professor at the École normale supérieure, he was a colleague of Slavoj Žižek and Giorgio Agamben. His magnum opus is L’Être et l’événement (1988), whose second part, Logiques des Mondes, appeared in 2006. Among his other works are L’hypothèse communiste (2009) and La République de Platon (2012). Together with Slavoj Žižek, he wrote Philosophie und Aktualität (2005), whose English translation Philosophy in the Present appeared in 2009. Read more on Ethics.
