Andreas Scholl
With his famously strong and clear voice and his exceptional vocal range, countertenor Andreas Scholl performs the great works of the Baroque and Renaissance in a truly unique way. Scholl grew up in a musical family and started singing in choirs at a young age. He was educated at the Basel Music Academy and rose to public acclaim as a singer in 1993, when he performed in Bach’s St John Passion. He has since worked with celebrities such as Ton Koopman, Christopher Hogwood and John Eliot Gardiner, performing in the world’s leading concert venues and at the most influential festivals. Scholl won a number of prizes, including two ECHO Awards (1999, 2005), an Edison Award (2002), a Grammy nomination and a BBC Award (2012). His Bach Cantatas (2012) with the Kammerorchester Basel were hugely successful with both the critics and the audience. He has released more than 60 extraordinary recordings, the most recent being Wanderer with pianist Tamar Halperin. In 2012, he spoke at the Nexus Symposium ‘On Beauty and Truth in Music’.
