Catholic priest and Jesuit

Antonio Spadaro, S.J.

Antonio Spadaro, S.J. is a Jesuit priest, theologian, and influential voice in contemporary Catholic thought. As former editor of the Jesuit periodical La Civiltà Cattolica he has played a key role in shaping and articulating the intellectual vision of the Catholic Church, and consequently of the late Pope Francis, a fellow Jesuit, to whom Spadaro was a close advisor. Spadaro is known for engaging with culture, politics, and technology through a theological lens that bridges faith and modern secular life, as is reflected by his Conversations on Faith (2024) with Martin Scorsese, his conversations with the artist Michelangelo Pistoletto as published in Spiritualità (2025) and his collections of Pope Francis’s texts on poetry and literature, Viva la poesia! (2025). Spadaro influences both ecclesial discourse and broader conversations on the Catholic Church’s role in the 21st century.
