Averil Cameron

Averil Cameron, Professor Emeritus of Late Antique and Byzantine History, can be considered an authority on the religion and culture of Byzantium. She studied at Oxford and was Professor at King’s College London between 1979 and 1994, where she was the first director of the Centre for Hellenic Studies. Cameron, daughter of working class parents, was appointed Dame of the Order of the British Empire. She is currently a researcher at the Oxford Centre for Byzantine Research. Her works, such as The Mediterranean World in Late Antiquity (1993), The Byzantines (2006), Byzantine Matters (2014) and Dialoguing in Late Antiquity (2014), are authoritative in her field of expertise.
