last Nuremberg prosecutor
Benjamin Ferencz
Benjamin Ferencz was a Transylvania-born American lawyer and the last surviving Nuremberg prosecutor. Ferencz left his native country with his family as a small child, escaping the persecution of Jews. After graduating from Harvard Law School in 1943, he joined the U.S. Army to take part in the liberation of Western Europe. He was one of the first investigators of Nazi war crimes during and after World War II. During the Nuremberg Trials, Ferencz was the Chief Prosecutor at the Einsatzgruppen Trial, also known as the ‘biggest murder trial in history’. After his return to the United States, he continued to advocate for the establishment of an international rule of law and an International Criminal Court.
