Republican US Senator

Bill Cassidy

Bill Cassidy is a Republican US Senator for the state of Louisiana. He grew up in Baton Rouge, and attended Louisiana State University (LSU) for undergraduate and medical school. In 1990, he joined LSU Medical School teaching medical students and residents at Earl K. Long Hospital, a hospital for the uninsured. During this time, he co-founded the Greater Baton Rouge Community Clinic, a clinic providing free dental and health care to the working uninsured. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Cassidy led a group of health care volunteers to convert an abandoned building into an emergency health care facility, providing basic health care to hurricane evacuees. Not long after, Cassidy entered politics: he was elected to the Louisiana State Senate in 2006. Two years later, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives and in 2014, he was elected to the US Senate where he has worked, amongst other things, to reduce health care costs and reform mental health care. Cassidy is chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP). After he supported Trump’s impeachment in 2021, Cassidy lost support within the Republican party and was not re-nominated for another term. He will leave the Senate in January 2027.
