Claude Lefort

Claude Lefort was a sociologist and philosopher whose research dealt with totalitarianism, democracy and human rights. He was a Marxist and socialist critical of the Soviet Union, and co-founder of the action group and journal Socialisme ou Barbarie. He wrote works such as La Complication: Retour sur le communisme (1999, English translation Complications: Communism and the Dilemmas of Democracy, 2007) and Le temps présent (2007). He was director of the École des hautes études en sciences sociales and taught at the Sorbonne.
