Darío Villanueva is Professor of Literary Theory at the university of Santiago de Compostela. From 1994 to 2002, he was that university’s rector. He obtained his PhD in Madrid and wrote such works as Teorías del realismo literario (1992, English translation: Theories of Literary Realism, 1997) and the prize-winning Imágenes de la ciudad. Poesía y cine, de Whitman a Lorca (2008). In 2011, Mario Vargas Llosa: The novel as literatura appeared. Darío Villanueva has been general secretary and member of the Real Academia Española since 2008; that same year saw the publication of his maiden speech: El Quijote antes del cinema.
