twentieth-century art historian and pioneer of iconology
Erwin Panofsky
Erwin Panofsky was a twentieth-century art historian and is considered one of the founding fathers of iconology. In the 1930s, he came to the United States as a university professor and remained there – for good – to escape the Nazi government gaining power in Germany. Among Panofsky’s work are Studies in Iconology (1939), The Life and Art of Albrecht Dürer (1943) and Early Netherlandish Painting (1953).
