James Steinberg

James Steinberg is an influential Democratic policy advisor, essayist and historian, currently holding the position of Dean of the Maxwell and Professor of Social Science, International Affairs and Law at Syracuse. Prior to becoming Dean in 2011, he served as principal Deputy Secretary of State to Hillary Clinton. His expertise in public affairs and foreign policy resulted in leading positions at several prominent institutes, including the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs and the Brookings Institution, where he supervised a wide-ranging research program on US foreign policy. He also acted as Deputy National Security Advisor to President Bill Clinton from 1996 to 2000, during which he was the President’s personal representative to the 1998 and 1999 G8 summits. He authored, with Michael O’Hanlon, the book Strategic Reassurance and Strategic Resolve: US-China Relations in the 21st Century (2014) and has published with Kurt Campbell Difficult Transitions: Foreign Policy Troubles at the Outset of Presidential Power (2008).
