Leo Vroman
Leo Vroman was a poet, writer, artist and biologist. He studied biology in Utrecht and escaped the Netherlands in the first days of World War II. He has been living in the United States since 1947. Vroman began working as a hematologist and made important discoveries, such as the Vroman effect named after him. In 1958, he gained his PhD at Utrecht University. Vroman became known as a writer through his 1949 book of poetry Gedichten, vroegere en latere. His large oeuvre comprises poetry collections, plays, novels and children’s books.
