Robin Blackburn

Robin Blackburn is Professor of Sociology at the University of Essex. He studied at Oxford, was a prominent member of the International Marxist Group and was an editor with The New Left Review. Blackburn publishes chiefly on capitalism, socialism, social policy and the history of slavery. He is best known for his works The Making of New World Slavery: from the Baroque to the Modern, 1492-1800 (1997) and The Overthrow of Colonial Slavery, 1776-1848 (1988). More recently, he wrote Age Shock: How Finance is Failing Us (2006), about the ‘financialization of everyday life’.
