Rory Stewart
Rory Stewart was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Malaysia. He served briefly as an officer in the British Army, and then decided to go study history and philosophy at Balliol College in Oxford. For the British Diplomatic Service he worked in Indonesia and Montenegro. In 2003, Stewart was the coalition Deputy Governor of Maysan and Dhi Qar, provinces in Southern Iraq. He wrote about his experiences in Iraq in The Prince of the Marshes (2006). Since 2010, Stewart has been a Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party. Rory Stewart published articles in the New York Times Magazine, London Review of Books, Sunday Times, Guardian, Financial Times and Granta. His book The Places In Between (2004) covers his journey on foot from Turkey to Bangladesh, across Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal.
