Thomas Mann

Thomas Mann was a writer. Among his best-known works are the novels The Magic Mountain (1924), Doctor Faustus (1947) and Joseph and His Brothers (1933-1943). His first novel, Buddenbrooks (1901), became a bestseller, upon which Mann became a prominent intellectual. Under Nazi rule, his books were banned. Mann was forced to emigrate, first to Switzerland, then to the United States. He returned to Zürich in 1952, to remain there until his death. In 1929, Thomas Mann received the Nobel Prize for Literature.
