Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga

Vaira Vike-Freiberga was, between 1999 and 2007, the first female President of Latvia. She studied psychology in Toronto and became Professor of Psychology at the University of Montréal, where she worked from 1965 until 1998. Under her presidency, Latvia became a NATO and an EU member. Since stepping down as a President, she has been a lecturer and an active member of the European Council of Foreign Relations, a pan-European think tank.
