William Deresiewicz
William Deresiewicz is a leading essayist, literary critic and writer. After his studies in biology, psychology and journalism, he obtained his doctorate at Columbia in English Literature. He taught English at Yale and Columbia before becoming a full-time writer in 2008. In his book Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life (2014), Deresiewicz offers a sharp critique of America’s Ivy League universities. He also published A Jane Austen Education (2011) and mostly recently The Death of the Artist (2020). Deresiewicz has published more than 290 essays and reviews and has won various prestigious prizes. His work, which has appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic and Harper’s, has been translated into 18 languages. His new book The End of Solitude: Selected Essays on Culture and Society will appear in the fall of 2022.
