major figure in contemporary world cinema

Wim Wenders

Wim Wenders is one of the most important figures of contemporary world cinema, and gained international fame as one of the protagonists of the New German Cinema in the 1970s. His films Paris, Texas (1984) and Wings of Desire (1987) are part of the international canon of film heritage, as are his innovative documentaries Buena Vista Social Club (1999), Pina (2011), and The Salt of the Earth (2014). In 2023, his Japanese feature film Perfect Days had its world premiere at the Festival de Cannes. The film was nominated for an Oscar in the ‘International Feature Film’ category. Wenders’ latest documentary, From Inside Out, about the architecture of Peter Zumthor, will be released in September 2026. Besides being a filmmaker and documentary maker, Wenders is also a photographer, author, screenwriter, and producer. With his production company Road Movies, founded in 1976, he has already produced well over a hundred arthouse films of himself and various other directors. In 2012, Wenders and his wife established the Wenders Foundation in Düsseldorf. The non-profit foundation brings together the artist’s cinematic, photographic and literary lifework and makes it permanently accessible to the public. The foundation is also engaged in film education for schools, and supports the promotion of young talent in the field of innovative cinematic storytelling.
