rabbi, Talmud scholar
Adin Steinsaltz
Adin Steinsaltz was a rabbi, a translator and the most influential Talmud scholar of his time. Beside his education as a rabbi Steinsaltz studied mathematics, physics and chemistry at the Hebrew University. He was the founder of the Israeli Institute for Talmud Publications, where his authoritative Hebrew translation of the Babylonian Talmud appeared. The Steinsaltz-edition, which later became the source for the English translation, is essential to the study of the Jewish religion. Steinsaltz also published many books on the Talmud, Jewish mysticism, theology, sociology and historic-biographical works.
