Carl Niekerk

Carl Niekerk is a Germanic scholar. He studied German in Groningen and Tübingen, and gained his PhD at Washington University in St. Louis, specializing in German-Jewish literature and music. In 2010, he published Reading Mahler. German Culture and Jewish Identity in Fin-de-Siècle Vienna, in which he investigates the literary, philosophical and cultural influences on Mahler’s thought and music. Niekerk is Professor of German at the University of Illinois, where he has been working since 1997.
