Dominique Schnapper

Dominique Schnapper is a prominent sociologist and scholar. From 2001 to 2010, she was a member of the French Constitutional Council. Her research covers a wide range of topics, such as the position of minorities, labor, citizenship, democracy and national identity. She has written extensively about these themes. In 2002 her book Providential Democracy: An Essay on Contemporary Equality was published in English, and earlier this year her most recent publication Les désillusions de la démocratie appeared in French. Schnapper is also known for her family ties; she is the daughter of Raymond Aron, a prominent philosopher, sociologist, and political scientist, regarded as one of the main intellectual opponents of Jean-Paul Sartre. Schnapper’s work continues to resonate in contemporary discussions on social cohesion, integration, and the evolving nature of nation-states.
