Czech writer; his works were blacklisted under the communist regime
Ivan Klíma
Ivan Klíma is a novelist and playwright. As a child, he survived a Nazi concentration camp. He went on to study at Charles University in Prague and worked as an editor at a publishing house. In 1967, he lectured against his country’s literary censorship and, upon his return in 1970 from a visiting professorship at Michigan University, after the Prague Spring, lost his job. His books were blacklisted, so that they could only appear abroad. Among them are Love and Garbage (1988, English translation 1990), No Saints or Angels (1999, English translation 2001) and Moje šílené století (My Crazy Century, 2009).
