Janos Starker

Janos Starker was educated at Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest and appointed first cellist at the Opera and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Boedapest at a very young age. He survived a work camp under the Nazi occupation and lived in Paris for a few years after the war, improving his skills as a cello soloist. The conductor Antal Doráti brought Starker with him to Dallas in 1948. There, Starker would become first cellist in the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, led by Fritz Reiner. From 1958 onwards, Starker was a professor at Indiana University in Bloomington.
