Stephen Spender
Stephen Harold Spender was a beloved and very prolific poet, writer and essayist, famous for – among other titles – Ruins and Visions (1942) and The Thirties and After (1978). He studied at Oxford, taught at several American universities and was Professor at University College London. As a member of the Allied Control Council he devoted himself to the denazification of Germany. In 1983 he was knighted in the Queens Birthday Honours.
