Yves Bonnefoy

Yves Bonnefoy was a poet, essayist, translator, philosopher, art historian and linguist. He studied mathematics, philosophy and art history at the Sorbonne. Bonnefoy’s debut was the poetry book Du mouvement et de l’immobilité de Douve (1953); he also translated various plays by Shakespeare. In 1981, he became Professor in Comparative Studies of the Poetic Function at the Collège de France. Among his essay and poetry collections are Alberto Giacometti, biographie d’une oeuvre (1991), L’enseignement et l’exemple de Leopardi (2001), Sous le signe de Baudelaire (2011) and L’Heure présente (2011).
