Albie Sachs

Albie Sachs was a human rights lawyer. He studied law in Cape Town and specialized in human rights, which twice led to his imprisonment by South African security police. He then lived in exile for many years in Great Britain, where he taught at the University of Southampton. Albie Sachs returned to South Africa as a member of its Constitutional Court and as a prominent member of the African National Congress. He wrote a number of books and essays on his time in prison and his experiences with the Apartheid regime, but also on culture and the environment. The Jail Diary of Albie Sachs (1966) was made into a theatre play, which was performed in a number of countries.
