Martha Nussbaum

Martha Nussbaum is a philosopher. She studied theatre and classics in New York and philosophy at Harvard. The publication of her book The Fragility of Goodness (1986) on classical Greek ethics made her famous as a humanities scholar. She has since written on a large number of subjects, such as freedom, women’s rights, the meaning of emotions and the structure of good education. Among her best-known works are Poetic Justice (1996), Women and Human Development (2000), Animal Rights (2004), Liberty of Conscience (2008) and Not for Profit: Why Democracy Needs the Humanities (2010). In 2011, she published Creating Capabilities. Nussbaum is Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago.
