Cristina Campo

Cristina Campo, pseudonym of Vittoria Guerrini, was a writer and translator. Besides poetry and translations (of, among others, Marianne Moore, John Donne, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Emily Dickinson, Simone Weil, William Carlos Williams, and Virginia Woolf), she published a small but unequalled oeuvre of lucid essays which balances poetry, art, philosophy, and religion. Her essays have been collected in Fiaba e mistero (1962) and Il flauto e il tappeto (1971). In 1987, Milanese publishing house Adelphi published the essay collection Gli imperdonabili. Nexus first introduced Campo to a Dutch audience, by publishing ‘De onvergeeflijken’ (‘The Unforgivables’) in Nexus 16, with an introductory essay by Rob Riemen – both published in English translation in Becoming Human Is an Art.
