political philosopher in the French liberal tradition

Pierre Manent

Pierre Manent is a political philosopher, who in 1978 was one of the co-founders of the journal Commentaire. He teaches political philosophy at the Centre de Recherches Politiques Raymond Aron in Paris and at Boston College. His investigation into the origin of modern political philosophy contributed greatly to the renewed appreciation of great French liberal thinkers Benjamin Constant, François Guizot and Alexis de Tocqueville. Manent wrote numerous books, such as Tocqueville and the Nature of Democracy (1982, English translation 1996), The City of Man (1994, English translation 1998), La raison des nations (2006) and Metamorphoses of the City (2013).
