Michael Ignatieff

Michael Ignatieff is an author, former politician and one of the world’s leading public intellectuals. Ignatieff was the leader of the liberal opposition in the Canadian parliament from 2008 to 2011, and is currently the president and rector of the Central European University in Budapest. Due to the Hungarian government’s attacks on this prominent liberal institution, Ignatieff was forced to announce the university’s move to Vienna at the end of 2018. Ignatieff taught at Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard and the University of Toronto, made programmes for the BBC and is the author of books including The Lesser EvilPolitical Ethics in an Age of Terror (2004), Fire and Ashes: Success and Failure in Politics (2013) and The Ordinary Virtues: Moral Order in a Divided World (2017). Ignatieff has regularly spoken and written for the Nexus Institute and held the keynote lecture at the very first Nexus Conference in 1996.
